Walter contacted disAbility Law Center of Virginia (dLCV) because he wanted to leave a nursing home and return home to live with his family. In order to do this, Walter needed dLCV’s assistance to remove his guardian. dLCV helped Walter get an expert psychiatric evaluation, make an advance directive for health care, and put together a well-reasoned plan for the care he would need when he returned home.
With dLCV’s help, Walter filed a petition with the court. The court granted the petition! His legal competence was restored and guardianship removed. Walter has left the nursing home and is now at home with his loved ones for the holidays.
dLCV offers information, publications, referrals, advocacy, legal counsel and representation to assist individuals with understanding advance directives, guardianships, transitions services, restoration of rights, and more! For more information, visit our Supported Decision-Making Resource page.
