Jerry was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at 22 years old. While living in a temporary group home during a manic episode, he had a disagreement with a staff member that escalated. Staff members slammed his fingers in a door so hard that he was rushed to the emergency room where 2 of his fingers were amputated. dLCV received a copy of the Human Rights report.
At no cost to Jerry, dLCV investigated the incident. The investigation revealed that 2 staff members used excessive force with Jerry.
Both staff members were disciplined and ultimately terminated. All staff at the group home received training on de-escalation policies. Jerry now feels safer living in the group home.
