In furtherance of dLCV’s mission, during the 2021 session of the Virginia General Assembly, dLCV will be actively seeking legislation to:
- Protect the right of curbside voting
- Ensure protection from discrimination in employment
- Gain full access for dLCV to abuse and neglect reports by community-based providers
Our Legislative Priorities
dLCV will address any legislation that in any manner limits the rights of people with disabilities. As part of our mission, and in response to proposed legislation and budget provisions, we intend to educate policymakers about:
- The need to improve access to government services for Virginians with traumatic brain injury,
- The need for increased accountability of Children’s Service Act (CSA) funds and the value of making funds under the CSA available in both public and private settings,
- The impact of any action that will address discharge and vocational needs of children and youth in institutions, and any action that would affect rights and safety in juvenile justice facilities,
- The risk of harm from COVID-19 and restrictions for people with disabilities in congregate care settings,
- The need for better enforcement of private school seclusion and restraint regulations,
- Any identified deficiencies in public school seclusion and restraint regulations,
- The impact of any legislation concerning educational rights of students with disabilities,
- The value of Supported Decision Making,
- The need for improved ADA enforcement by building code inspectors, and
- The need to phase out subminimum wages for people with disabilities.
The mission of the disAbility Law Center of Virginia is to advance independence, choice and self-determination; protect legal, human and civil rights; and eliminate abuse, neglect and discrimination of people with disabilities through zealous and uncompromising legal advocacy and representation.
We are available to educate policymakers about the potential impact of legislative proposals. Please let us know of any legislative proposals or budget issues that you think we should be following. Contact us at info@dlcv.org or by calling 1-800-552-3962 or 804-225-2042.
