Virginia is unnecessarily hospitalizing hundreds of Virginians with mental illness, according to a report issued by the disAbility Law Center of Virginia today. According to the report, Virginia could save more than $26 million each year, simply by assisting people who are ready to move into the community to leave the restrictive hospital settings.
Broken Promises, the Failure of Mental Health Services in Virginia, claims that Virginia should “resist the urge to increase the number of hospital beds but instead invest in community resources for treatment of mental health needs.”
